The Huron Wind project was announced on March 20, 2001. An environmental screening process in accordance with the Ontario Ministry of the Environment's Environmental Screening Process for Electricity Projects was then undertaken with public meetings held on July 5, 2001 and July 31, 2001. On May 3, 2002, with environmental approvals in place, it was announced that Vestas, the world's leading supplier of wind turbines, would manufacture and install five 1.8-megawatt turbines for the Huron Wind project. Groundbreaking took place on July 11, 2002 with initial work involving the construction of roads for equipment and the installation of foundations and underground electrical cables. The components for the wind turbines arrived in Canada from Denmark in late September and were transported to site as required for assembly in October. First electricity from the wind farm was produced on November 4 and the units were tested and commissioned over a three-week period. A ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the official opening of Ontario's first commercial wind farm, Huron Wind, was held on November 29, 2002. It was officially declared in service on December 1, 2002 |
